Preparing for Your Senior Photoshoot
Your camera-holding fairygodmother on how to make family outfits way easier.
Graduating, finals, and all the goodbyes and lasts can be crazy enough, but I know that you also want those perfect senior photos! Before you go to your session, I wanted to give you some quick tips to hopefully help you feel more confident, more ready, and more ready to shine in front of that camera.
How should I pick what to wear?
Some good ideas here are to find something you feel comfortable in, a favorite outfit, or something that you feel nicer in. I always expect there to be an outfit change, so feel free to have fun with having two outfits!
One outfit can be your favorite outfit, a dress that you love, or just a color or fit that really represents you and you feel super confident in. Don't feel pressured to dress up if you don't want to! This is all about you. So wear what feels the most authentic to you! There's no pressure to wear the tallest heels or the nicest dress- in fact, I way more recommend coming in what you feel comfortable and confident in!
Your second outfit can be something related to the college you're going to, or a hobby or sport. It's always super fun to take some of your senior photos in maybe your future school colors, your sports uniform, or just something that references what you enjoy right now.
You could also just wear something from your current school! If you want to bring your varsity jacket, your yearbook, or wear something from your current school, that's a great idea too.
How do I pick a location?
When it comes to location, we just need somewhere that fits your vibe. it could be something that represents your hometown, your campus, your hobbies, or just somewhere that you really enjoy. Feel free to have fun with it! You could do everything from run around flower fields to take photos outside your favorite Taco Bell. No one is stopping you from taking the photos that feel the most fun to you!
Here’s some classic location ideas: A canyon, somewhere with trees, flower fields, a park, by a lake, a cityscape, on a rooftop, on the streets, downtown, or even a studio setting. And always feel free to ask your photographer for more ideas!
Do keep in mind that if you're picking a location that involves a lot of walking, pick the right shoes for that! And if we're going somewhere outdoors, bring shoes you're comfortable in and can get a little dirty.
What should I bring?
Props are honestly a great idea for senior photos! Bring your yearbook, your camera, your notebook, your favorite stack of books, your sports gear - really whatever feels like you.
Bringing props is such a great way to put more of your personality into your photos, and also give you something natural to do if just standing there and smiling feels really weird to you.
We can totally take pictures of you reading your favorite books, pointing at your favorite photos in your yearbook, holding your softball bat or with your varsity jacket, and so much more. Whatever your interests are, think of ways that you can include those in your photos and bring some props to help you.
You could also bring some simple props like fake flowers, bubbles, or just things to help the whole session feel more fun and feel more like you.
How should I get ready?
When it comes to getting ready for your session, this does not have to be prom night! If you don't want to wear a ton of makeup, nobody's making you.
Come as natural or as formal as you want to! You can look totally like your everyday self, or you can try to doll yourself up, it's totally up to you. But, I never recommend wearing more makeup than you normally would feel comfortable with. Nothing will make you feel weirder than feeling like you're under a thousand layers of foundation on your photo shoot day!
But have fun with it! Don't be afraid to wear bold colors, a little more blush than normal, or just whatever feels fun to you. You can wear funky earrings, a perfume to make you feel more confident, or put on some music just so you can really get into the vibe.
And make sure to give yourself plenty of time to get ready! Make sure you have time to get your hair ready, your outfit ready, and all the little details that go into showing up for a perfect photo shoot.
I hope these help you feel a little more prepared for your senior photo shoot! I promise you, you are going to do great and you're going to look amazing. Just don't be afraid to have a little fun, and make this about you! This is about your senior year, and marking this moment- so don't let your nerves get in the way!
